Machern Castle

The origins of Machern Castle date back to the 16th century, with an inscription from 1566 indicating the construction of the original two-winged building. Even then, parts of an older predecessor building were integrated. The cross-rib vaulted rooms on the ground floor and the round stair tower in the courtyard are from this early construction phase. Originally designed as a moated castle, it lost its water features when water-bearing layers were cut through during the construction of the Leipzig-Dresden railway line in 1838. After the Thirty Years' War, the complex received its current three-winged Baroque appearance; reconstruction work was completed in 1733, which raised the stair tower to 21 meters.
