Mackenzell Castle

The origins of the complex date back to 1146, when the knights of Mackenzell were first mentioned in documents, though fortifications were absent at that time. It was not until 1253 that Prince-Abbot Heinrich IV von Erthal had walls and an embankment erected. Just twenty years later, in 1273, Prince-Abbot Bertho IV von Biembach conquered and destroyed the castle. From 1334, the complex belonged to the families of Bimbach and Schenkenwald, and later the von Buchenau family acquired most of it. In 1415, the castle came into the possession of the Fulda Prince-Abbot, as evidenced by a coat of arms above the entrance to the stair tower.
