Mälsåker Castle

The estate's origins date back to the early 17th century when it passed from the Kagg family to the Soop lineage through marriage. Baron Gustaf Soop commissioned Nicodemus Tessin the Elder to design and build the current main building in the 1660s and 1670s. In the early 18th century, the castle came into the possession of the Gyllenstierna family, who added extensions such as corner wings and a staircase. Later, it passed to the noble families Wachtmeister and von Fersen, experiencing its heyday under the von Fersens and housing a significant art collection. After an initial restoration around 1898, the castle suffered a fire in 1945, having previously been used by the Norwegian legation. The Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities took ownership in 1951 and renewed the roof. Extensive restoration work from 1993 by the Central Board of National Antiquities led to its reopening in 2006.

Mälsåker Castle is located on an island in Lake Mälaren, within the municipality of Strängnäs, in the Södermanland region, Sweden. It stands approximately 12 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore Mälsåker Castle today and discover its restored rooms. Concerts and guided tours are held in the adjacent park during the summer.
