Maggenberg Castle (Tafers)

Georges von Diesbach (1575-1648), Lord of Maggenberg (Prémont), Heitenried, Schönfels (Belleroche), Ror and Menzisswil, was an officer in French service and then active in Murten. He married Margerite von Alex, the Lady of Torny. Georges and Marguerite von Diesbach probably had Maggenberg Castle built around 1630.

Even today, a molasse relief with the Diesbach-Alex coats of arms can be seen in the chapel, the colors of which are probably incorrect due to a restoration error. This sculpture was originally located outside the chapel.

When Marie-Anne von Diesbach Belleroch (1689) married Peter-Walter Kuenlin (1672-1742), the castle and the two territories passed to the Kuenlins. When Nicolas von Kuenlin died in 1795, the castle and the lower territory passed to his son Jean-Augustin.

The upper territory went to Francois-Nicolas, Nicolas' other son, then to Jean-Baptist von Kuenlin, who sold it on May 16, 1825, to Louis von Lalive von Epinay for 26,000 francs.

On February 3, 1832, Charles von Kuenlin, son of Jean-Augustin, sold the castle and the lower territory to his Roman cousin von Diesbach Belleroche for 44,000 francs. The latter sold the entirety for the same price in 1834 to his son-in-law Louis von Surbeck, whose sister Louis von Lalive von Epinay had married. Maggenberg then passed to the von Weck family, who owned this property until 1933. Today, the castle houses the Singine retirement home "Pflegeheim des Sensebezirks".
