Mahlberg is first mentioned in a document in 1218, when Emperor Frederick II confirmed the castle and the surrounding dominion as an imperial fief.

Already at the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, it became clear that the medieval castle could not stand up to modern cannons as a defensive structure. It was severely damaged.
