Mailberg Castle
Mailberg Castle, an impressive complex in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria, is perched on a hill at the southern edge of the historic village of Mailberg. Its origins date back to the 12th century, when it was founded as a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller and today represents the world's oldest commandery still owned by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
History+
The structural foundation of the castle dates back to a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller, likely built during the Second Crusade (1147–1149). Its establishment was based on a donation from Chadolt von Zogelsdorf. From the 13th century onwards, the castle developed into the religious, economic, military, and hospital center of the Mailberg Commandery. Over the centuries, the castle underwent numerous renovations and expansions, incorporating stylistic elements from Gothic, Renaissance, and particularly Baroque periods, complemented by minor adjustments in the 19th and 20th centuries.
