Mammertshofen Castle (Roggwil)

Mammertshofen Castle in Roggwil, Canton Thurgau, is one of the most imposing keeps in Switzerland. It was the seat of the St. Gallen Marshals of the same name, whose lineage died out around 1360. Under the Schenken v. Castell, the castle was captured without a fight during the Appenzell Wars and therefore not destroyed. It remained with this family until 1645. In 1792, the Orlandi family from Bevers (GR), with the consent of Abbot Beda Angehrn of St. Gallen, acquired the large estate for 80,000 guilders. It included approximately 300 Jucharten (approx. 108 ha) of land and forest with the four farms, "Buhof", "Holzerhof", "Buemüli" and "Winkel", as well as two large vineyards. Since 1792, the castle has been in the private possession of the same family.

The masonry of the 13th-century keep contains boulders weighing up to three tons. The projecting, timber-framed upper story dates from the early 16th century. Renovations took place in 1591 and 1655. Since then, the keep has remained unchanged. The old residential building was rebuilt in 1694 under the mayor of Constance and supplemented with a chapel. The northwest building, the battlements with a neo-Gothic pointed arch gate, and the bridge were built by Johann Christoph Kunkler in 1852. Since 1986, various professional interior restorations have been carried out.
