Marbach Castle

In Ried in der Riedmark, Upper Austria, stands Marbach Castle, a three-story estate with a rectangular floor plan. An integrated castle chapel is on the southwest corner. The castle, whose roots date back to the 12th century, is now privately owned.

History+

The first documented mention of Marbach dates back to 1145, when an Eberhardus de Marpach appeared. After the death of the last Marpach owner, Ulrich de Marpach, who did not return from a crusade in 1217, the then castle passed into the possession of the sovereign. The feudal tenants changed frequently, including Ulrich Lichtenegger and Rudolf von Wallsee. In the 15th century, the complex was destroyed during the Hussite Wars but was later rebuilt by the Rohrbach family as a moated fortress.
