Marck Castle (Tecklenburg)
The moated castle Haus Marck is a manor house in the town of Tecklenburg in the district of Steinfurt in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).
The house is the birthplace of Friedrich von Bodelschwingh (* March 6, 1831), the long-time director of the Bethel Institutions named after him.
The moated castle is located south at the foot of the town of Tecklenburg in the immediate vicinity of the Teutoburg Forest, embedded in the Talaue Haus Marck nature reserve. The main buildings are surrounded by a historic moat system.
The Lords of Horne (Horn) were vassals on the Marck estate since 1198. In 1368, the von Horne family acquired the property for the construction of a house.
The simple and single-story buildings still date from the 14th century. In 1537, Gertrud von Horne, the heiress of Claus von Horne, married the mercenary leader Georg von Holle. He expanded the complex and built the manor house. Its current form is predominantly based on alterations from 1754. The estate has been owned by the von Diepenbroick-Grüter family since 1804.
Peace of Westphalia+
Haus Marck played an important role in the Peace of Westphalia. In 1643, preliminary negotiations took place here, before the peace treaties, which ended the Thirty Years' War in Germany and simultaneously the Eighty Years' War of Independence of the Netherlands, were concluded on October 24, 1648, in Münster (Westphalia) and Osnabrück.
Current Use+
Haus Marck is still the residence of the Diepenbroick-Grüter family.
Since 1998, the registry office of the city of Tecklenburg has offered the possibility of conducting weddings in the historic Landrat's room as an alternative to the registry office in the town hall.
The Förderverein Talaue Wasserschloss Haus Marck e.V. (Friends of the Talaue Moated Castle Haus Marck) uses the concept of Akademie Haus Marck, among other things, the knight's hall of the castle for educational purposes with topics such as nature conservation, ecology, and history.
A cultural program with castle concerts and readings is also offered.
