Margarethen Castle

The former moated castle was originally built as part of a chain of border fortifications against Hungary. It was first mentioned in 1336 when Ottokar von Hausbach issued a document here.

Through marriage, what was then St. Margarethen came to the Polheimers and in 1392 to Hans von Liechtenstein. After his fall, Duke Albrecht III seized the castle and handed it over in 1395 to Johanna, the wife of Albrecht IV, as a dower. After that, the owners changed very frequently. In 1508, Christoph Flachsberg is mentioned. From the Counts Breuner (1588), the castle passed via the Counts von Thürheim (1672) to Ferdinand Amadeus Count Harrach (1720). In 1686, the castle was converted into a moated palace.

It received its current appearance through extensive construction measures in 1760. In 1803, Count Alois von Moncenigo and in 1812 Prince Philipp von Batthyány-Strattmann were the owners of the Margarethen am Moos estate. Through a daughter of Prince Philipp and a son of the former French Empress Maria Louise from her second marriage to Lieutenant Field Marshal Adam Adalbert Count Neipperg, it came to the Montenuovo family in 1850, who died out in 1951.

The castle, which was already in a very poor condition at the time, was finally acquired by Heinz Ries, in whose family ownership it still remains today. It has been externally restored in recent years. Work is still underway on the renovation of the living quarters. The state rooms can be rented for weddings and cultural events.
