Marienburg Castle

The origins of Marienburg Castle date back to the Leutesdorf Castle, built by the bailiffs of Leutesdorf, appointed by the Counts of Virneburg. In 1300, Knight Werner Vogt von Leutesdorf was known as a robber knight. Through marriages, the bailiffs acquired shares in Bürresheim Castle and moved there, while Leutesdorf Castle became a wine estate. After the extinction of the individual lines of the bailiffs of Leutesdorf and an 89-year legal dispute, the Breitbach-Bürresheim family became owners in 1661. After several changes of ownership, the Electoral Trier court councilor Ernst Anton Sohler acquired the property in 1736. Between 1750 and 1754, he had a four-story Baroque castle built on the foundations of the old fortress, with its main facade facing the Rhine and a Rococo portal on the landward side.
