In the West Thuringian municipality of Marksuhl stands Marksuhl Castle, an example of a former hunting and residential castle. Originally built in the Renaissance style, it now serves as an administrative seat.

History+

The castle's origins date back to 1587, when Duke Johann Ernst commissioned the construction of a hunting lodge opposite St. Hubertus Church. It was completed in 1591, but the Duke soon lost interest, after which the building was used as a hunting lodge and administrative building. Between 1672 and 1686, it served as a residence for the Duchy of Saxe-Eisenach. Under Duke Johann Wilhelm, the castle underwent alterations from 1712, including an eastern wing extension and the creation of a castle garden with an orangery.
