Maroldsweisach Castle

As early as the 13th century, a local noble family bore the name of the place. In the 15th century, the Stein von Altenstein family followed as owners; their ancestral seat, Altenstein Castle, remains as a ruin a few kilometers to the south. Both families held the property as a fief of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg. The original moated castle of Maroldsweisach was probably destroyed during the Peasants' War in 1525. In 1768, the Barons Horneck von Weinheim acquired the knight's estate from the Stein family, having already been enfeoffed with the tithe of Maroldsweisach in 1765.
