Martinfeld Castle

Martinfeld Castle was constructed in 1611 by the von Bodungen family, who had settled in Martinfeld by 1518. It remained in the family's possession, with Burchard von Bodungen being the last owner, until its expropriation during the land reform of 1945. After World War II, the castle was initially used as a youth hostel. In 2000, the Thuringian regional association of the German Youth Hostel Association took over the property and renovated it from 2001 to 2003, reopening in May 2003. Following a temporary closure in 2007, the “Schloss Martinfeld e. V.” association acquired the building in August 2008 and has operated it as an international scout meeting place and independent youth hostel since September of the same year.
