Marzoll Castle

Marzoll Castle, a Renaissance structure, stands in the eponymous village of Marzoll near Bad Reichenhall. It is known as the first of its kind in Bavaria, built in the Italian Renaissance style with a cubic main building and four round corner towers.

History+

Between 1527 and 1536, the Reichenhall patrician family Fröschl, who owed their fortune to the salt trade, had Marzoll Castle built. It is presumed to have been erected on the foundations of an older predecessor building. In the 16th century, the gatehouse and the curtain wall were added. Under the lords of Lasser von Lasseregg, further outbuildings were constructed around 1708, and around 1750, the rooms of the second upper floor received stucco decoration by Benedikt Zöpf. From 1837, the Barons von Malsen altered the exterior appearance.
