Marzoll Castle

Marzoll Castle in Marzoll near Bad Reichenhall was built between 1527 and 1536 by the Reichenhall patrician family Fröschl, probably on the site of an older predecessor building. The Fröschl family had acquired their enormous wealth through the ownership of salt-boiling facilities in Reichenhall. The family seat was executed in the then new Renaissance architectural style, originating from Italy. The complex, in the form of a cubic structure with four round corner towers, was the first of its kind in Bavaria. In the course of the 16th century, the gatehouse and the curtain wall were probably added. Under the castle lords Lasser von Lasseregg, further outbuildings were erected in 1708, and around 1750, the rooms on the second floor were representatively decorated with stucco work. The stucco work comes from Benedikt Zöpf, who at this time also decorated the church of St. Valentin next to the castle in Rococo style. (Zöpf stuccoed several sacred interiors in Salzburg, including the Collegiate Church of St. Peter) From 1837, the Barons von Malsen had the exterior of the castle redesigned. The Renaissance domes of the four corner towers were removed and replaced by battlements in the Neo-Gothic style. A battlement crown was built on the outer walls of the main building. (Cf. From 1991 to 2007, the castle was owned by the city of Bad Reichenhall. Since then, the exterior has been renovated and the interiors secured. The castle courtyard is open during the day, the interiors are only accessible as part of a guided tour.

In 2007, the castle was sold to two investors who plan to establish an Art Deco hotel and a private residence in the castle.
