Mattighofen Castle

The origins of Mattighofen Castle date back to the 8th century, when an Agilolfing ducal estate stood on this site. In 788, it was first documented as "Matagao." After the Agilolfinger's deposition, the property passed to the Carolingians. King Henry II granted the castle and the entire Mattiggau to the Diocese of Bamberg in 1007. From 1400, the Kuchler family ruled the area and the castle until it reverted to the Bavarian dukes in 1438. In 1459, Knight Jan Holub was enfeoffed with the castle. After the extinction of the Holub line, Count Christoph von Ortenburg acquired the castle in 1517. His son Joachim had it converted into a Renaissance castle with four corner towers in 1551 and established a brewery. Fires and later alterations have largely erased the traces of this period, but a doorframe with the double coat of arms of Ortenburg-Fugger and the inscription "Joachim Grave zv Ortenburg etc. Vrsvla Gräfin zv Ortenburg geporene goggerin Freiin zv Khirchperg vnd Weissenhorn sein Gemachel MDLI" still remains. In 1602, the Counts of Ortenburg sold the castle to the Bavarian dukes, in whose possession it remained until the Peace of Teschen, which ceded the Innviertel to Austria.
