Matzen Castle

The complex features an elongated north and south wing, a short western connecting tract, and to the east, the round six-story keep. In the lower castle courtyard, there are four-story rows of arcades with groin vaults, featuring round and octagonal marble columns from the second quarter of the 16th century. On the ground floor of the south wing, there is an entrance hall with a beamed ceiling. A late Gothic coat of arms and tendril painting from around 1500 was uncovered there in 1968. The living quarters were furnished after 1873 with paneling and inventory mostly from Tyrol and Upper Austria. From the original structure, individual late Gothic chamfered door frames made of Hagauer marble have been preserved.

In the north wing, there is a two-story, east-facing chapel. The chapel was first mentioned in a document in 1470. It features a stucco ceiling with a cornice from 1668. The altar with a wooden crucifix dates from 1500 and is attributed to Veit Stoss; it has been in the Tyrolean State Museum (TLMF) since 1978.

Matzen Castle served as a filming location in 1957 for both Die Zwillinge vom Zillertal (The Twins from Zillertal) and Das einfache Mädchen (The Simple Girl).
