In Reith im Alpbachtal-Matzen in Tyrol, Austria, Matzen Castle stands on a low hill spur. Originally built as a fortress, it was transformed into a castle and now houses a museum.

History+

The first documented mention as Matzen Castle dates back to 1278. It was founded by the ducal Bavarian ministerials of Freundsberg and remained in their possession until 1468. Subsequently, ownership changed, including the Fieger family (1521–1550), Ilsung (1564), Fugger (1589–1657), and Pock (1658–1684). Under the Pfeiffersbergers (1734–1873), the castle began to fall into disrepair. After 1873, restoration and expansion into the current castle took place under the direction of W. Baillie-Grohmann.

A museum within Matzen Castle can be explored. The complex features an elongated north and south wing, a short western connecting tract, and a round, six-story keep to the east.
