Maxlrain Castle
Maxlrain was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century under the name Mahsminreini as property of the Bishop of Freising. In the 12th century, the Maxlrainers are mentioned as serfs of the Lords of Beyharting. In 1516, the Maxlrainers, who had by then risen to powerful lords, acquired the immediate imperial lordship of Waldeck with its main town Miesbach. In 1523, Wolf von Maxlrain had the feudal lordship of the Bishop of Freising from Wallenburg transferred to his seat Maxlrain. In 1637, the Maxlrainers were elevated to counts. In 1734, after the death of the last Maxlrainer, Johann Joseph Maximilian Veit, the Maxlrainer ancestral property passed to the Imperial Count Max von Rheinstein und Tattenbach. In 1822, one year after the transformation of the Hofmark into a patrimonial court, the Counts of Arco auf Valley inherited the Maxlrain property. In 1848, a administrative reform in the Kingdom of Bavaria led to the end of the Hofmarken.
Today, the castle is owned by the Lobkowicz family.
Castle+
The original castle, built in the first half of the 9th century, burned down in 1577. The current castle is an octagonal building with 4 corner towers and annexes:
- Main building: built 1582-1585
- Castle chapel: essentially late Gothic, redesigned in Rococo style in 1720
- Farm buildings: 18th century
- Castle avenue (oaks and linden trees): 18th century
In 1831, the poet Franziska von Hoffnaaß was born at Maxlrain Castle.
Castle Brewery+
Around 1730, the Countess obtained permission from Elector Maximilian III Joseph to brew brown beer, by proving that the brown brewery right had been exercised in Maxlrain for more than 100 years.
Finally, in 1870, the famous eagle hunter Max Graf von Arco-Zinneberg acquired Maxlrain for his son Ludwig, who, with his first wife, a Countess Schaesberg, added the east wing, and with his second wife, a Princess Lobkowicz from Bohemia, added the west wing, and also rebuilt the brewery at its current location.
