Maxlrain Castle

The first documented mention of Maxlrain as property of the Bishop of Freising dates back to the 9th century. In the 12th century, the Maxlrainers emerged as vassals of the Lords of Beyharting. Their power grew, and in 1516, they acquired the imperial immediacy of Waldeck. In 1523, Wolf von Maxlrain arranged for the feudal lordship of the Bishop of Freising to be transferred from Wallenburg to Maxlrain. The family was elevated to the status of counts in 1637. After the death of the last Maxlrainer in 1734, the estate passed to the Imperial Counts of Rheinstein and Tattenbach. In 1822, the Counts of Arco auf Valley inherited the Maxlrain property. The original castle from the early 9th century burned down in 1577.
