At the exit of the Metznitztal valley in the municipality of Friesach stands Mayerhofen Castle, a cubic structure from the late 17th century. It is known for its Josephine facades and a Biedermeier garden.

History+

The origins of Mayerhofen date back to 1303, when Archbishop Friedrich transferred the Salzburgian Meierhof to the then Maria-Magdalena Monastery. In the 18th century, the estate changed hands several times, including the Counts Gaisruck and later Count Aichelburg. Bishop Salm-Reiferscheid and Peter von Mayerhofen were also owners for a time. In 1812, Karl Anton von Dresdner acquired the castle, before it passed into the possession of the Knappitsch family in 1837, who still own it today.
