Medingen Castle

Medingen was first mentioned in 1289 under the name "Medogewe". The history of Medingen was closely linked to the manor, which already existed in the 14th century. The nearby mills, first mentioned in 1459, were also closely linked to the manor. Over the centuries, the manor had various owners: Fam. Arras (also had influence in Schieritz), Fam. Bomsdorff, Fam. Bose (already mentioned in connection with Gamig Estate), Fam. Bünau (Weesenstein and others...), Fam. Carlowitz (many estates throughout Saxony), Fam. Hohenthal, Fam. Loos, Fam. Oertzenputtlitz, Fam. Spohr, Fam. Teubern, Fam. Schönfeld and Fam. Vitzthum von Eckstädt. The last bourgeois owner was a Mr. Haake, in whose company the falling ball viscometer, a device for determining the viscosity of liquids, was invented. In 1892, after a fire, the house was rebuilt in the Neo-Baroque style. In Medingen, many buildings are listed as historical monuments due to their historical significance, such as the manor house. Today, the castle houses apartments and a law firm.
