Mering Castle

Mering Castle is a two-story, L-shaped building with a high hip roof and two polygonal corner towers with spires. It is located, surrounded by a park with old trees, on the western edge of the market town of Mering on the Paar river.

The history of the castle begins around 1060. It was originally founded by the Franconian noble family of the Welfs, who built a so-called lowland castle on an island in the Paar. In the 13th century, ownership passed to the noble family of the Wittelsbachs, who used the castle until 1808. Among other things, it was the seat of a "Pflegegericht" (a type of administrative court) with administrative duties. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly plundered, burned, and destroyed. In the War of the Spanish Succession in 1704, it was completely destroyed except for its outer walls.

After numerous changes of ownership, in 1843 Edmund Freiherr von Boutteville from Cumières/Verdun acquired the castle from its owner, by then the state of Bavaria, including the castle brewery which had belonged to it since the early 17th century. In 1939, the estate passed by inheritance to the noble family von Grauvogl. In 1945, the last lady of the castle of the Boutteville family, Maria Alfonsine Edle von Grauvogl, née Boutteville, died. After 1945, the castle was used as a retirement home. From 1954, after extensive renovation, Luitpold Edler von Grauvogl used the building as a residence. The castle brewery ceased operations in 1982.

The oldest surviving ceiling painting in the castle dates from 1590. Above the east gate of the building is the coat of arms of the baronial family Boutteville. It bears the years 1843 (acquisition of the castle by the baronial family Boutteville) and 1945 (death of the last family member of the Bouttevilles).

The castle, whose oldest part is the malt floor with an impressive cross-rib vault, is privately used. Like the castle park, it is not accessible to the public.
