On the northern edge of the Rureifel, in the Merode district of the municipality of Langerwehe, lies Merode Castle, a Renaissance water castle. It has been continuously owned by the Merode family since the 12th century.

History+

The first confirmed mention of the estate dates back to 1170. The original complex was built by Werner von Kerpen, a royal ministerialis, who had received the surrounding land as a fief from Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. He had a fortified seat built on this site, which gave the place and the family their name, derived from "de Rode" (clearing). In 1263, it was first referred to as "Castrum de Rode". The castle's current appearance is largely due to construction work under Field Marshal Jean Philippe Eugène de Merode-Westerloo at the beginning of the 18th century. Further alterations were made between 1834 and 1838.
