Merseburg Castle stands in the city of Merseburg in Saxony-Anhalt. It once served as a royal palace, ducal residence, and bishop's seat.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when Bishop Heinrich von Warin initiated the first construction between 1245 and 1265. Under Bishop Thilo von Trotha, a reconstruction as a three-winged complex took place between approximately 1470 and 1500, with Merseburg Cathedral forming the fourth wing. In the early 17th century, in 1604/05, Duke Johann Georg I of Saxony commissioned renovations by Melchior Brenner. The Neptune Fountain in the inner courtyard also dates from this period.
