Metternich Castle

Metternich moated castle was built no later than the 13th century. A noble family named Metternich, who held the castle as a fief from the Archbishop of Cologne, was first mentioned in a document in 1316. In 1348, the property was documented as part of an inheritance division and remained in the family's possession until 1692. After being sold to Franz Wilhelm von Schönheim in 1692, the castle later passed to the cousins Clemens August and Josef Clemens von Merle. The latter initiated the creation of a landscape park in 1802. In the 19th century, the manor changed hands several times, including Heinrich Gottfried Wilhelm Daniels and Karl Friedrich von Müller. In 1879, Franz Freiherr von Schorlemer-Overhagen acquired the property and had the mansard roof and the farmstead rebuilt.
