Michelbach Castle

The Lords of Limpurg, who owned Michelbach from at least the 14th century, planned the construction of a dower house in the early 17th century. Lord Friedrich VII had initially designated the site as a dower for his first wife Margarethe von Erbach and later for his second wife Agnes von Limpurg-Gaildorf-Schmiedefeld. Agnes ceded Michelbach to her son Wilhelm, who in turn intended it as a dower for his wife Dorothea zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg. In 1608, the decision was made to build a simple dower house in Michelbach. The Grisons master builder Nicolas Androi from Roveredo presented the plans in 1609 and supervised the construction, which lasted until at least 1628. Although intended as a dower house for Dorothea, she died in 1631 before her husband Wilhelm.
