Originally, the castle was owned by the Nobles of Reck. Via the family of Argon and later Heinrich von Freiberg, the castle came into the possession of the Bohemian King and later Emperor Ferdinand I in 1528. Afterwards, it was given as a fief to Jakob Fugger. His adopted son, Raymund Fugger, had the castle extended by Narziß Krebs in 1535–1536. In 1691–1695, the castle was extensively rebuilt by Paul Graf Fugger. In 1842, it was rebuilt again and has been preserved in this state to this day.
