Milse Water Castle has been located in the Milse district of Bielefeld since the beginning of the 9th century. However, it was first mentioned in a document in 1194, when Milse was still called Milesou.

Over the centuries, the castle repeatedly had new owners, partly through enfeoffment, partly through marriage or inheritance. Arnold Christian von der Horst, who owned the estate in 1689, completed the castle. Thus, the main portal on the north wall was built in 1704 in the late Renaissance style. Until 1825, the Barons von Hörde and the von Rolff family owned the property. In 1771, the then lord of the manor, Philipp Ludwig von Hörde, gambled away his property at the casino and lost. In 1870, the castle had its last noble owners, the Barons von Fürstenberg-Borbeck, after which it was sold step by step.

Since 1886, Milse Castle has been owned by the Lott family. Heinrich Lott ran a paint factory in the outbuildings for many years. Today, the building is still inhabited by his descendants.
