Minnesheim Castle in Salzburg is a 17th-century edifice that once served as a summer residence and is now located within the municipality of Salzburg. It is notable for its adaptation to an existing road, which is reflected in its unusual wall kinks.

History+

Archbishop Paris Lodron had Minnesheim Castle built in 1644. It served him as a summer residence and family seat, particularly for his sister-in-law Countess Katharina Lodron. The construction took place on the grounds of the former Hofhölzl. The development of the area around what is now Gnigl was made possible by the draining of the Schallmooser Moor, initiated by Paris Lodron. An inscription on the castle, “Dulce oblivia vitae,” expresses the desire to forget everyday worries. The estate included a park, which was later transformed into a romantic garden by Franz Graf Lodron around 1790.
