Mirabell Castle

Around 1606, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had the palace built outside the city walls for his companion Salome Alt, initially naming it Schloss Altenau. After his downfall in 1612, his successor Markus Sittikus von Hohenems expelled the family and renamed the palace Mirabell to erase the memory of his predecessor. Between 1620 and 1642, under Prince-Archbishop Paris von Lodron, the complex was integrated into the city's fortifications. The palace acquired its current Baroque form through a renovation between 1710 and 1727 under Archbishop Franz Anton von Harrach, carried out by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. A devastating city fire in 1818 destroyed large parts of the palace, which was subsequently rebuilt in the Neoclassical style, losing much of its Baroque splendor. In 1866, the palace became the property of the city of Salzburg.

Today, Mirabell Palace houses local authorities, serving as an active administrative center. Visitors can explore the opulent interiors and the famous Mirabell Gardens, known for their Baroque design and sculptures.
