Mirow Castle

The origins of the castle island date back to the 13th century, when a commandery of the Order of St. John was established there. In the 16th century, the Mecklenburg dukes gained increasing influence over the appointment of the commanders. After the death of the last Catholic commander, the commandery was secularized and subsequently administered by Protestant administrators, mostly from the ducal house. Following a major fire in 1742, large parts of the complex were renovated. The current castle was built between 1749 and 1752 on behalf of Adolf Friedrich III, according to plans by Christoph Julius Löwe.
