Mistelbach Castle

The origins of Mistelbach Castle date back to the Middle Ages, when a moated castle stood on this site. It was first documented in 1343 as property of the Strachner family, who held it as a fief from the Schaunbergers. After the Schaunbergers died out, the feudal sovereignty passed to the Starhembergers. Ownership changed hands frequently, including the Anhanger, Kirchberger, and von Gera families. In 1599, Wolfgang von Polheim acquired the estate, whose heirs later sold it to Gregor Hack von Pornimb. The Hack family undertook the transformation into the current castle complex. After further changes of ownership, including to the von Kauthen and von Rummerskirch families, the castle came into the possession of the Counts Firmian in 1772, who held it until 1887. Subsequently, the Oberösterreichische Volkskreditbank acquired the property. Around 1946, the dilapidated tower of the castle was removed.
