Möchling Castle

The history of Möchling Castle dates back to 1123 when it became the property of St. Paul's Abbey in Lavanttal. It served as the seat of the administrator for the abbey until 1770. The original late medieval building suffered a fire in 1666, after which it was redesigned in the Baroque style. On the first floor, there is a ballroom with a stucco ceiling featuring a barely decipherable ceiling painting with coats of arms, including that of Abbot Albert Reichard (1677–1727), as well as eight smaller ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the life of Hildegard von Stein. The stucco decoration is attributed to the brothers Gabriel and Johann Peter Wittini. The building consists of two residential floors and a former storage floor with a gabled roof.
