In Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, Möckern Castle is a structure whose origins date back to the 10th century. It ranges from a Slavic moated castle through Baroque and Neo-Gothic alterations to its current use as a school. The old keep dates from the Middle Ages and features a Baroque dome.

History+

The castle's history began in the 10th century with a Slavic moated castle. The keep and the water-filled moats from this period have been preserved. The current keep, an eleven by eleven meter fieldstone structure, received its Baroque dome between 1710 and 1715. During this period, after its destruction in the Thirty Years' War, Christian Wilhelm von Münchhausen initiated its reconstruction as a half-timbered building. Between 1840 and 1863, Wilhelm Graf vom Hagen redesigned the castle in the English Gothic style, with pointed turrets and battlements.
