Möderndorf Castle, a striking historical building, is located south of Hermagor on the right bank of the Gail river. Its cube-shaped, three-story architecture characterizes the village of Möderndorf and tells the story of the central Gail Valley.

History+

The first documented mention of Möderndorf appears in the parish register of Hermagor in 1331. Around 1458, the castle was owned by Simon Weidegger, a vassal of the Counts Palatine of Gorizia. After the Peace of Pusarnitz in 1460, it passed into the possession of Emperor Frederick III. Later, the Habsburgs granted the estate to the Counts of Salamanca-Ortenburg. Following several changes of ownership, including to the Lords of Rechbach and Wiedmann, Prince Johann Ferdinand Porcia acquired the castle on October 8, 1662. The Princes Porcia relocated the regional court from the dilapidated Grünburg to Möderndorf.
