Möderndorf is first mentioned in a document in 1164. At that time, Bishop Roman of Gurk bought the "predium Gebhardi Moderndorf dictum" from Margrave Engelbert of Istria.

In the second half of the 13th century, there was a small manor here, which was fortified like a tower in the 14th century. A family also named themselves after Moderndorf at that time.
