Möhler Castle

The origins of Möhler date back to the 11th century, when it was mentioned as the knight's estate “Mudelare” in the tithe registers of Freckenhorst Abbey. In the 13th century, a Meinhard de Mudelare exchanged lands with Marienfeld Abbey, and Count Konrad von Rietberg referred to Albert de Mudelere as his vassal. It is presumed that a castle-like complex was built on the present site at that time. In the 16th century, the “de Wendt” family leased lands here, and Lubbert de Wendt built a Renaissance structure between 1549 and 1564. However, this building was dilapidated by the end of the 17th century. Through the will of Franz Egon von Wendt in 1709, the estate passed to the Baltic branch of the Barons von Kettler. Karl Aemilius Freiherr von Kettler had the current Baroque moated castle built between 1710 and 1715; its architect remains unknown. The interior of the summer residence was probably never fully completed, and the family only inhabited the castle for a few decades.
