Moers Castle

The origins of Moers Castle date back to around 1200, when a square tower made of tuff stone was erected. In the 13th century, a circular mound was built around this tower, surrounded by a curtain wall made of Roman field-fired bricks – one of the oldest preserved brick constructions in the Rhineland. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the complex was expanded outwards, with the curtain wall being repurposed into a central interior wall. A 1580 map shows the former perimeter house castle with its north and south towers. After its conquest by Maurice of Orange, the castle was reinforced with five bastions between 1601 and 1604.
