Möthlitz Castle

The village of Möthlitz, also known as Motelicze or Motenitz, was first documented in 1303. During the Thirty Years' War, the two resident noble estates, along with the entire village, were destroyed by acts of war. In 1648, one of the estates was rebuilt as a noble residence in a clay-timber frame construction, from which the current Möthlitz Castle developed. The Hünicke family, who had owned estates in the region since the second half of the 14th century, built this property. Matthias von Hünicke, canon and senior of the Brandenburg chapter, donated the patron's pew for the Möthlitz church in 1669. The continuity of ownership by the Hünicke family ended in 1903 with the death of Hermann von Hünicke, after approximately 500 years. His niece, Hedwig von Knoblauch, née von Blücher, inherited the castle and initiated renovation and modernization measures, including the addition of a kitchen wing and a winter garden, as well as the installation of modern building services. The financing was secured through the sale of clay from the Möthlitz fields.
