Moggenbrunn Castle

The estate's origins date back to the first half of the 14th century, when a knightly family from Kemmaten owned a manor house here. This was expanded into a moated castle by the end of the 16th century. After the Kemmater line died out in 1600, the castle passed to Duke Johann Casimir of Saxe-Coburg, who transferred it to Knight Veit von Lichtenstein. The latter made only minor interior alterations. In the 17th century, the castle changed hands several times, including to Baron von Born and Christoph von Wildenstein. In the early 18th century, the daughters of Heymond Johann von Schilling inherited the estate. Magda Barbara, one of the daughters, married Privy Councillor Johann Karl von Würtzburg in 1722 and became the sole owner. After her death in 1780, the property passed to her brother-in-law, the chamberlain von Kanne, whose daughters eventually inherited it.
