History+
The origins of Mondsee Castle date back to 748, when Duke Odilo of Bavaria founded a Benedictine monastery here. It developed into a cultural center where manuscripts such as the Montpellier Psalter and the Mondsee Fragments were created. After its incorporation into the Frankish Empire in 788, it became an imperial monastery and acquired possessions. In 831, the monastery was transferred to the Prince-Bishopric of Regensburg, but regained its independence in 1142 under Abbot Konrad II. The abbots received the right of pontificals in 1389. Following secularization in 1791 under Emperor Leopold II, the monastic property was placed under the Religious Fund.
