In Montabaur, Montabaur Castle, a baroque edifice, stands on the Schlossberg. It is the landmark of the town in the Westerwald with its yellow facade, four-winged complex with an almost square inner courtyard, and round towers with curved domes.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 10th century, when a "Castellum Humbacense" was mentioned in 959 as the residence of Duke Hermann of Swabia. In 1018, Emperor Henry II transferred the castle to the Archbishop Poppo of Babenberg of Trier. Archbishop Theoderich of Wied had the complex fortified, but it was destroyed in 1212 by the Counts of Nassau. Theoderich initiated its reconstruction from 1217 and named the castle hill "Mons Tabor" after Mount Tabor in Israel, from which the name Montabaur developed. Around 1280, the keep was built.
