Montfort Castle

The estate's origins date back to 1334, when a rural property near Gols was mentioned in the Nonnberg Urbar. By 1412, the farmstead was owned by the noble Golser family, who held it as a life estate from Nonnberg Abbey until 1528. Subsequently, ownership passed through marriage to Lienhart Hörmann and later, in 1606, to Baltasar Egger. Mathias Mayr von Pürglau and his wife Susanne Fabrizin acquired the estate in 1650. A phase began in 1699 when Maria Anna Countess of Montfort, sister of Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf Thun, purchased the Golserhof and ten years later also acquired Lüftenegg Castle and other surrounding lands. The resulting property was named Thunegg Castle or Tumeggerhof after her. Anton III Count of Montfort moved into Montforter Hof with his wife in 1728, where both passed away in 1733. The Countess bequeathed the property as a fideicommiss to the lineage of her grandson Josef Graf Lodron. Later, in 1791, Hieronymus Graf von Lodron acquired the estate but sold it in the same year to Prince-Archbishop Colloredo. He used the castle for hunting excursions and had a gloriette built.
