Moos Castle

Moos Castle is a historic moated castle in the village of Moos in the Deggendorf district of Bavaria. Its origins date back to the early 13th century. It has Renaissance architecture with four towers and an arcaded courtyard.

History+

The first documented mention of the property occurred in 1207. In 1270, Niederaltaich Monastery acquired the estate in Moos and had the existing castle demolished. Around 1340, the Aichbergers, as vassals of the monastery, took possession of the estate and rebuilt the castle. Their rule lasted until 1511. During the War of the Landshut Succession in 1504, the castle was devastated by Palatinate troops. Reconstruction began in 1520, at which point the castle received its four towers. Between 1568 and 1640, the Preysings were the lords of Moos Castle. A fire in 1619 destroyed half of the castle, including the St. George's Chapel.
