Moosbrunn Castle

Moosbrunn Castle is located on St.-Peter-Hauptstraße in the eighth district of Graz, St. Peter.

Moosbrunn Castle was converted from a farmhouse, the "Wagnerhof", in 1538 by Hans Gerhab, the provincial administrator of Vasoldsberg, and expanded by the Herbersdorfer family at the end of the 16th century. In the 17th and 19th centuries, some extensions and alterations were made to the hook-shaped, two-story building, which is equipped with hipped gables. Notable owner families included the Khuenbergers (1572), the Herbersdorfers (1575-1613), and the regional secretary Dr. Gottfried Beck. From 1682, the complex began to decay, but was described as revitalized by contemporaries in 1735. From 1751 onwards, ownership changed frequently.

The castle chapel in the west wing is dedicated to Jesus and Mary and features a tower with a neo-Gothic spire. The stucco lustro wall altar, including the altarpiece depicting Jesus' farewell to Mary, dates from the mid-18th century. The small organ in the music gallery was built around 1700. In the 18th century, Field Marshal Count Heister and later his widow, a born Countess Kaunitz, were the estate owners. Due to many changes of ownership in the course of the 19th century, Moosbrunn Castle visibly decayed until it was renovated in the 1990s.
