Moutier Castle, a historic building in the Bernese Jura region of Switzerland, once served as a representative seat of government and today houses important public functions.

History+

The origins of Moutier Castle date back to around 1590, when it was built as the official residence for bailiffs. Originally, the complex was surrounded by a wall and four towers. In 1630, a first fire occurred, destroying parts of the castle. Another fire in 1737 reduced the building to ashes, leaving only the foundations. Reconstruction in its current form took place around 1740. In 1817, the Canton of Bern acquired the castle and continued to use it as the seat for its bailiff in Moutier.
