Mühlbach Castle

Mühlbach Castle was first mentioned in 1083. Ownership changed in 1150 to Huk and Chunrat von Mühlbach, in 1333 to the Lords of Wallsee, and in 1361 to the Lords of Hofkirchen. In 1481, the castle was destroyed by the troops of Emperor Frederick III. It was not until the second half of the 16th century that the castle was rebuilt into a habitable Renaissance palace. The builder was Wolf II von Hofkirchen. The new building at that time was only one room wide. The floors were connected by stone spiral staircases. When Georg Andreas Freiherr von Hofkirchen was outlawed in 1620 during the Counter-Reformation for rebellion against the Emperor and lost his possessions, Mühlbach fell to the sovereign.

Ownership changed after 1641 to Philipp Jakob Carl von Carlshofen and in 1750 to the Counts Engl von Wagrain. They had it thoroughly redesigned in the 18th century. In 1840, the Counts Gudenus acquired the estate and redesigned the castle, both externally and internally, in the popular Historicist style of the time.

The well-maintained castle is still inhabited by the Gudenus family today. It is the center of a forestry operation and an organically run farm. Some of the premises can be rented for events.
