Mühldorf Castle

Mühldorf Castle is located in the municipality of Feldkirchen an der Donau in the district of Urfahr-Umgebung in Upper Austria (Mühldorf 1).

Mühldorf was first mentioned in 1347 as the property of Niklas der Mühldorfer. At that time, it belonged to Freudenstein Castle and, after the construction of Oberwallsee, became part of its cadastral possessions. In 1363, the Premsers received Mühldorf as a fief from the Wallsees. From 1483, after the extinction of the Wallsees, Mühldorf belonged to the Liechtensteins. In 1491, Virgilius der Premser zu Mühldorf is mentioned. Mühldorf remained in the Premser family until 1560. The last Premser in the male line was Achaz Premser. In 1563, Wilhelm Tupfer von Mitterndorf received the property as a Liechtenstein fief. The Tupfers were followed by Hans Georg Siegmar Stangl (1594). After him, Mühldorf came to Rosina von Herberstein.

In 1660, Count Sebastian von Clam acquired the castle; a few years later, Matthias von Undorf was its owner. In 1674, Johanna Undorf brought Mühldorf as a dowry into her marriage with Johann Georg Peisser von Wertenau. In 1747, the Cistercian Abbey of Wilhering bought the castle and the associated lands from Maria Clara von Hoch. It remained in the possession of the abbey until 1980, with the complex serving as a manor farm.

In 1942, parts of the folklore collections of the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz were relocated to the castle until the end of the war. Afterwards, the castle came into private ownership and is now used as a hotel and restaurant. The Hotel Mühldorf is housed in the outbuildings, and a veterinary practice is now located in the former extensive stables.
