Mühldorf Castle

The first documented mention of Mühldorf dates back to 1347, when it was owned by Niklas der Mühldorfer and belonged to Freudenstein Castle. Later, it became part of the Oberwallsee cadastral property. In 1363, the Premser family received Mühldorf as a fief from the Wallsee family, and after the extinction of the Wallsee line, the property passed to the Liechtensteins in 1483. The Premser family retained Mühldorf until 1560. Various changes of ownership followed, including the Tupfer family, Hans Georg Siegmar Stangl, and Rosina von Herberstein. In 1660, Count Sebastian von Clam acquired the castle, and a few years later, Matthias von Undorf became its owner. Through the marriage of Johanna Undorf to Johann Georg Peisser von Wertenau in 1674, Mühldorf came into their possession. Its purchase by the Cistercian Abbey of Wilhering in 1747 led to it remaining in its ownership until 1980 and serving as a farmstead. During World War II, parts of the ethnographic collections of the Upper Austrian State Museum were relocated here. After 1980, the castle passed into private ownership.
