In Gmunden, Upper Austria, Mühlwang Castle is a historic building that developed from a medieval castle to a representative palace. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 440 meters above sea level and is now privately owned, also serving tourist purposes.

History+

The origins of Mühlwang Castle date back to 1305, when it was first mentioned as the ancestral seat of the Mühlwanger family. They were retainers of the Lords of Ort. After the Mühlwangers died out around 1500, ownership changed hands multiple times. In the 16th century, under the Lords of Grünpichl, it was converted from a castle into the present-day palace. Mühlwang belonged to various noble families and personalities, including the Zollner, Hofmann von Grünpichl, and Schmidttauer.
