Münsingen Castle

Münsingen Castle is a 16th-century castle in the municipality of Münsingen in the canton of Bern, Switzerland.

The site of the current castle was formerly occupied by the 13th-century Sennenburg. In 1550, Hans Franz Nägeli and his wife Rosina Wyttenbach had the current castle built, bearing the year 1550, and the old castle was demolished down to the height of the first floor. To this day, the semicircular shape of the floor plan and the garden walls reveal the course of the ring wall.

The castle was rebuilt several times, and in the mid-18th century, the corner stove by Peter Gnehm was installed in the "von Steiger Room". In 1826, Peter Vollmar Vissering bought the castle from Franz Ludwig Sigmund Steiger and Elisabetha Steiger. In 1830, the castle was acquired by Alfred de Rougemont, who had the lower castle demolished in 1838. After two more changes of ownership, the castle passed to the Canton of Bern in 1877.

From 1893 to 1895, the Cantonal Psychiatric Clinic was built on the estate. In 1977, the municipality of Münsingen took over the castle and built a retirement home on the upper castle estate. The horse barn from 1782 became the parish hall, and the hayloft became a library. Today, the property houses a restaurant, the community hall, and a youth center.
