Murnau Castle

Archaeological finds and dendrochronological analysis of a wooden beam confirm an initial construction phase around 1232/1233. Later documents, including a charter from 1322, suggest that a residential tower already existed as the official seat of a Vogt in the early 14th century. This tower was soon supplemented by an enclosing wall. Excavations also revealed a chapel east of the tower with burials from the 11th or 12th century. Between 1233 and the first half of the 16th century, there were only minor structural changes. Extensive reconstruction began in 1539, shaping the current south wing and a northern annex, giving the castle its present Baroque appearance.
